A FOODIE JOURNEY IN THE KAROO

The Karoo is an incredible place of windmills, long roads, veld, farms, beautiful landscapes, sunsets, stars, slow food, wonderful hospitality and amazing stillness.
Join me for a taste of the Karoo. We will visit the Eastern Cape part of the Karoo where the food tastes like real food, people are so very friendly, the gardens incredible and the experience in this farming community soul fulfilling!
Our tour starts with our flight to Port Elizabeth. From here we wind our way, stopping at a wonderful farmstall, to the town of Cradock. Check in at our historic accommodation where we will stay for 3 nights.
Tonight the Karoo Food Festival begins. This is a celebration of real home food.
Where it is grown and sourced. It’s wholesome, hearty and real. It promotes local slow food and small producers.
For me it’s the nostalgia of real food that we grew up with. The food our grandmothers and oumas made. The Sunday lunches that were made with all the love in the world!
The first night will be Karoo Tapas with live music.
The next day we browse and enjoy the food demos which will be on the hour every hour, the homemade stalls of food and drinks, coffees and crafts. Expect things like amazing Karoo lamb, cheese, pomegranates and raspberries. Karoo-bossi honey, relishes, jams, biltong and amazing bread. Tonight we go to a dress up formal dinner with wine tasting at the Victorian Manor.
On day three we will do some farm visiting, and enjoy lunch on one of them. Then of course, there will be time to peruse the shops and Cradock like this gorgeous little place above. Dinner tonight in town and if you feel up to it a food movie.
The next day we drive to the sleepy village of Bedford with its densely treed lanes and amazing rose gardens.
We go to a wonderful farm where we will be welcomed with herbal teas picked from the garden and a walk through the farm garden and kitchen garden. A talk and pick as we walk. We will have a demo of planting edibles like herbs in small spaces, and in window boxes and pots.
We will go into the homestead and have a masterclass on salads which will include interesting dressings and additions to the salads. The focus will be on recipes for taste, ease and speed. Our salads will be served as lunch with interesting health breads. We then leave for coffee and dessert at another local spot.
We visit THE prime garden in Bedford and the adjacent homestead that belonged to Andries Stockenstrom.
A local guide then shows us the SA Rosarium which abounds with heritage roses which the guide will explain how they came to South Africa as well as their care and the part they play in this village.
On day five we hit the road again, and head down to a farm owned by this family, the Lombards. Mom and daughter, Lani and Louzel were semi finalists in My Kitchen Rules South Africa.
Here we do a True Living FARM TO TABLE experience in a relaxed Platteland environment. We spend the day with them where we cook amazing farm produce in a farm kitchen with a beautiful AGA!!! We even learn to make the original recipe of Louzels Oupa Grahams lemonade, as he owned THE cool drink factory in Cradock many years ago. In the farmstead study the shelves are lined with his original bottles of cool drink essence and tonic collection, which I’m sure will have us captivated.
We will have all our farm to table meals here, served with wine.
There is opportunity to go on guided drives and/or walks on their working farm. We stay on the farm tonight and our eyes will close to the complete stillness of the Karoo. A perfect time to reflect and listen to the silence of the veld.
Day six, after our farm breakfast we make our way back to Port Elizabeth airport, with honest, genuine stories to be told and memories to last……….until we visit the Karoo again. Because believe me it will hold a special place in your heart. As it does mine!
